Bridges
Perseverance and
A Deep Respect for Nature
Meghalaya is defined by its stunning landscapes and the warmth of its people. Another unique
feature of the state is its root bridges—structures that are not built in a matter of days or years,
but take decades to form. The roots of rubber trees are gradually guided across streams; over
time, they transform into sturdy bridges. These living bridges grow stronger with the passage of
time, embodying years of patience and a profound respect for nature.
India has now applied to have these
root bridges a national heritage
included in the UNESCO World
Heritage Site network.
Today, local communities maintain over 120
root bridges. Teams inspect the condition of
these bridges annually, and some individuals
have even established nurseries to strengthen
the surrounding areas. A complete ecosystem
has been developed for their conservation.
