     National Voters’ Day Special

        During the first Lok Sabha election in the
        country, there were 17.32 crore voters, a num-
        ber that has now crossed 97 crore in the 2024
        elections. Managing this more than fivefold in-
        crease in the number of  voters would not have
        been possible without EVMs and VVPATs.





        Sections 16, 19, and the Representation of the People
        Act,  1950,  lay  down  the  basic  eligibility  criteria  for
        enrollment.  These  criteria  are:  the  applicant  must  be
        an Indian citizen, mentally sound, have completed 18
        years of age on a specified date, and be a resident of the
        concerned constituency. It is the constitutional respon-
        sibility of the Election Commission to ensure that only
        eligible citizens are included in the electoral roll. This is
