What classifies as Startup...
l If it is incorporated as a private limited
company or registered as a partnership firm
or a limited liability partnership in India
l Up to a period of 10 years from the date of
incorporation/registration
l If its turnover for any of the financial years
since incorporation/registration has not
exceeded Rs 100 Crore
l Entity is working towards innovation,
development or improvement of products or
processes or services, or if it is a scalable
business model with a high potential of
employment generation or wealth creation
POINTS TO NOTE
l But if an entity is formed by splitting up or
reconstruction of a business which is already
in existence, it shall not be considered a
Startup by the Government
l Also, Startups which register on the Startup
India portal don’t automatically qualify for
the benefits. They have to apply separately
with DPIIT to avail benefits of the various
schemes like intellectual property services,
relaxation in public procurement norms, easy
winding of company etc

INDIAN APP FOR INDIAN CHILDREN
KUTUKI: Started by Sneha and Bharath, a
husband-wife duo, Kutuki is truly an example
of ‘Made in India’ as it is an App for early
learning and content for young Indian children.
Everything about Kutuki is 100 per cent Indian,
and it caters exclusively to Indian children.
Ranging from rhymes, stories, animations
and illustrations, it always has something new
for the children to learn. The App came to
limelight after winning in the Government’s
Atma Nirbhar Bharat App Innovation Challenge
in the e-learning category. Even Prime Minister
Narendra Modi was so much impressed with
this App that he mentioned it during his ‘Mann
Ki Baat’ session held on August 30, 2020.
Several programmes were undertaken since
the launch of the initiative to contribute to the
Prime Minister’s vision of transforming India
into a country of job creators instead of job
seekers. These programmes are managed by
a dedicated Startup India Team, which reports
to the Department for Promotion of Industry
and Internal Trade (DPIIT). These programmes
have catalysed the Startup culture, with Startups
getting recognised through the Startup India
initiative and many entrepreneurs availing the
benefits of starting their own business in India.
The Scheme has proven to be a boon by
providing an environment conducive to their
growth. A number of Startups have come up
across the country in various sectors. The
top 10 highlighted sectors in terms of number
of Startups are: IT services, Healthcare and
Life Sciences, Education, Professional and
