Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana
One Year of Accident Insurance for Just ₹20
Jyoti Nihal, a 27-year-old resident of a village in the Harda district
of Madhya Pradesh, lost her husband, Murlidhar Nihal, in a sudden
accident. Murlidhar was the sole earning member of the family, which,
in addition to Jyoti, included two young children. During this difficult
time, the family found solace in a small decision Murlidhar had made
earlier—registering for the Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana
(PMSBY) by paying a nominal fee of ₹12 (now ₹20). This scheme
is a government-backed annual personal accident insurance plan.
When Murlidhar passed away, his wife, Jyoti, received a payout of
₹2 lakh through this scheme.
Countless such stories are associated with the PMSBY. At
the launch of the scheme, Prime Minister Modi remarked
that a dialogue in a movie once poignantly noted that
one cannot even buy a shroud for ₹12; however, the
government has introduced an insurance scheme that
has brought tangible benefits to the most economically
vulnerable sections of society.
