Generation of Self-Enumeration ID (SE ID)
Upon successful submission of the form, a unique
11-digit Self-Enumeration ID (SE ID) – starting
with the letter ‘H’ – will be generated. This ID will
be sent to you via SMS and email.

9 When the census enumerator visits your
home, please share your SE ID with them for
verification purposes.
SE ID Matching Result
If the SE ID matches the existing records, your
information will be verified and accepted. If the SE ID
does not match, the enumerator will collect the necessary
details from you and fill in the new information.

BCE. Records from the reign of Chandragup-
ta (321–297 BCE) indicate the existence of a
standing army comprising 700,000 men—a
force that would have necessitated a sub-
stantial population base to sustain it. Based
on the aforementioned facts, it can be safely
concluded that India possessed a significant
population before the Common Era. Further-
more, efforts to collect population-related
data were undertaken from very early times.
In the third century BCE, the renowned
“Arthashastra” —developed by Kautilya, one
of the most brilliant minds of the Mauryan
political administration—established the col-
lection of population data for taxation pur-
poses as a fundamental tenet of state policy.
This treatise provides a detailed account of
the methods to be employed for conducting
population counts as well as economic and
agricultural censuses.
Population enumeration—the importance
of which was recognized by efficient ad-
ministrations in ancient times—was largely
neglected during the medieval era, a period
characterized by a certain degree of political
instability in the country’s history. However,
with the subsequent development of a
modern governmental apparatus, the need
for accurate population statistics was once
again keenly felt. The first comprehensive
